How do you feel most days? Are you energized and fairly optimistic? Or are you drained and depleted?

There are many possible causes for feeling this way. And if this is one of your issues, I’d love to help you with this.

We need to look at the possible causes for these feelings so you can figure this out. And then you can deal directly with the cause of these feelings and get on with your life.

And, of course, stop using food to feel better.

In this coaching session, we’re going to consider all the reasons you may be feeling drained.

We’ll separate the potential causes into physical and mental or emotional reasons for your exhaustion. And we will take a look at what things are within your control, and which are outside of your control.

And then we’ll make a plan.

If you are frequently tired, mentally and physically, and don’t have the energy or the bandwidth to do what you need to do, let’s take this apart and solve it. Together.

Episode 133: Why Planning Ahead Really Works

Let’s take an honest look at how you’re deciding what to eat and when to eat.

If you’re letting triggers other than physical hunger determine what and when you eat, you’re not alone.

There are many triggers to eat that have nothing to do with physical hunger in your body. But continuing to be triggered to eat without hunger will not get you to your goal.

Triggers to eat are all around us, all the time. And they’re not going anywhere. What’s important is to learn how to respond to them in a way that actually helps you.

You already know I believe in planning ahead of time, both for what and when you eat. So, in today’s coaching session, let’s look at why planning works and why it’s important to your weight loss success.

I’ll explain why you’re susceptible to triggers (hint: it’s your lower brain) and what you can do about it. I’ll show you how you can retrain your brain. How you can create new programming (using your higher brain) that will build new habits in response to old triggers.

You may resist planning because of old associations with dieting rules and restrictions. We’ll talk about that in this coaching session, too.

Planning works because when you plan ahead – deciding ahead of time what and when you will eat – you are using your brain’s executive functions. And that provides you with guidance that always serves your highest good. Planning ahead is a foundational skill of eating like a natural eater.

Let’s get started so I can show you why planning really works and how you can begin using this tool today.

Are you part of the way to your goal and wondering how to stick with it? This episode will help you with that.

Sometimes, when you have a big goal that requires a lot of time and commitment, it’s easy to lose your way.

You might find yourself doubtful that you can keep up with what got you to this point. You might find that you’re not quite as motivated as you need to be. As you were in the beginning. Or you might find yourself slipping back into old patterns. Patterns that aren’t helpful in getting you closer to what you want.

I want to show you, in this coaching session, how to hold onto the success you’ve created so far, and how to move forward without losing ground or motivation.

This requires looking at your beliefs about yourself. About what you think you are capable of. And about staying for the long haul.

This means knowing how to motivate yourself when that sticky note on your computer screen is no longer noticeable to you.

And this is what you need to do. You need to keep your eye on where you are going. And, at the same time, on what your next step will be.

You’ll learn how to know what to focus on, and when to switch focus. From the future, to the present, and back again and again and again.

You’re creating a new path for yourself. A smooth path. It’s rocky today. But if you stick with it, it will get easier.

Several years ago, I struggled. With just about everything.

Some days I felt ‘fat’ and other days I was content with my body. Some days I struggled with my eating and other days I just ate naturally. Sometimes I felt attractive, and other days I hated the way I looked. And my moods! I never knew how I’d wake up, feeling up one day and down the next. And I had no idea that I could ever feel a sense of control or understanding of these moods.

My self-image fluctuated wildly. And now I know that this happened because my thoughts about myself were fluctuating wildly too.

I had no compass to tell me the truth. How I really looked and felt and what was real and what was just my story. This takes perspective and being objective about yourself.

Sometimes you have a friend who serves as your mirror. Being with her lets you see yourself as the rest of the world sees you. And then you can be objective about what’s really you.

But sometimes you need the objectivity of a professional, who can see you and help you see yourself. In truth.

Today we’re talking about how to gain some objectivity in how you view life and yourself.

Episode 122: Emotional Eating and Your Weight

Today we’re going to focus on what I’m guessing is your main issue: emotional eating.

This happens when you have linked an emotion with food. So, when you start to feel the beginning of that feeling, whatever it is, and it feels uncomfortable, you have learned to muffle that feeling with food.

The food tastes good, and it distracts you from whatever that feeling was. And so, your habit is formed.

But if you eat from an emotion without hunger, no doubt you will be carrying around some extra weight.

We talked about emotional eating in Episodes 40, 42 and 43. And I thought we should revisit this topic and get really clear so you can understand how to solve this problem.

Do you eat when you’re happy? Do you eat when you’re sad? How about when you’re bored?

Well, this is emotional eating. It includes what some call ‘stress eating’.

All of this type of eating is really a habit. It can feel pretty strong and pretty compelling.

Almost like once the idea to eat comes over you, you have no choice.

Episode 118: There is No Hurry

Are you in a perpetual hurry to lose weight? Does that work for you?

My educated guess is that it does not work. Hurrying makes you feel panicky and fearful and worried. It makes taking intelligent action hard, if not impossible.

I know that you’re probably in the habit of looking for the quickest fix. We all are these days.

But that quick fix, when it comes to weight loss, simply does not help you get what you want. And what you want is permanent change.

Permanent change comes from changing how you view things and changing your thinking. Then you can more easily change what you do.

If you force yourself to rush and take fast action, you will fall down and likely not get up for a while. And that will make your progress even slower.

So, hurry not only isn’t likely to get you what you want, but it doesn’t feel good. And in order to lose weight permanently, the whole process needs to feel good, so that you will stick with it.

If you’re willing to even consider rejecting your habits of hurried thinking and hurried actions, pull up a comfy chair and come into this coaching session with me.

Let’s take apart your habit of always being in a hurry for weight loss. It will come. But let’s not let hurry stop you because it’s not a sustainable way to live.
