Episode 134: Do You Expect to Lose Weight on Day 1?

In today’s coaching session we’re going to talk about what you expect when you start a new weight loss plan or program.

You’re so excited (and a bit scared) when you get started. You’re ready to really do it this time, aren’t you?

You may not want to admit it, but secretly you’re hoping to get on the scale tomorrow and see big changes. When you don’t, you get discouraged. And most likely, the new plan doesn’t last.

There are six things I’ll cover:

  1. What your expectations are when you start a new weight loss plan.
  2. Why you have these expectations.
  3. What happens when reality doesn’t match your expectations.
  4. The results of this pattern (it’s a never-ending cycle.)
  5. What is realistic to expect when you start a new plan.
  6. And what that reality requires of you.

Understand why you expect this and why it’s unrealistic. And these expectations are unrealistic. (We’re keeping it real here – I’ll always tell you the hard truth.)

Episode 132: How to Stick to Your Weight Loss Plan for the Long Haul

Sometimes, when you have a big goal that requires a lot of time and commitment, it’s easy to lose your way.

You might find yourself doubtful that you can keep up with what got you to this point. You might find that you’re not quite as motivated as you need to be. As you were in the beginning. Or you might find yourself slipping back into old patterns. Patterns that aren’t helpful in getting you closer to what you want.

I want to show you, in this coaching session, how to hold onto the success you’ve created so far, and how to move forward without losing ground or motivation.

This requires looking at your beliefs about yourself. About what you think you are capable of. And about staying for the long haul.

This means knowing how to motivate yourself when that sticky note on your computer screen is no longer noticeable to you.

And this is what you need to do. You need to keep your eye on where you are going. And, at the same time, on what your next step will be.

You’ll learn how to know what to focus on, and when to switch focus. From the future, to the present, and back again and again and again.

You’re creating a new path for yourself. A smooth path. It’s rocky today. But if you stick with it, it will get easier.

I’ll bet you think that you are struggling to lose weight because of a reason that is special and unique to you.

The good news is these reasons are common. And so, they have a common solution. And if anyone can learn and apply that solution, well, you can too.

  1. You think it’s more about what you’re eating than why you’re eating.
  2. You are so used to escaping your feelings that you can’t picture life without emotional eating.
  3. After eating the way you have for years; you want a super fast solution.
  4. You have no faith in yourself, and don’t really believe you can do it.
  5. You think your case is unique, and that you have some very special reason why you’re different.

Episode 120: The Four Stages of Weight Loss

Are you frustrated because you can’t seem to stop eating?

I’d like you to take a more detailed look at these times when you can’t stop eating.

Because the way I think about it, you may be making progress that you just can’t see yet.

There are four stages of losing weight. And you need to get through all four of them to be able to eat the way you’d like to eat.

And, if you know about the four stages, you’ll be able to see where you are, understand why you’re there, and keep moving forward.

So, what are these stages?

  1. Stage 1 is when you’ve just overeaten, and you realize what has happened when it’s all over.
  2. Stage 2 is when you’re in the middle of overeating, you see what you are doing, and yet you just can’t get yourself to stop.
  3. Stage 3 is when you are able to see what you’re about to do. You haven’t started overeating yet. You are able to step back and see what is happening. And still, you can’t stop the habit. You eat anyway.
  4. And finally, Stage 4 is when you’re about to overeat, you see what is happening, and yes! You are able to stop yourself! This is big!

So, what we’re going to talk about today are these four stages.

I will tell you why you’re in each one. You’ll learn what you’re likely to do and think at each stage. And, I will help you get a good perspective of where you are, and what’s ahead, so you don’t give up.

You probably don’t give it a second thought when you shrug off the promises you made to yourself.

If you are ready to set some goals and get what you truly want this year, then you’ll have to think about and work on developing your commitment or recommitment.

A commitment to yourself, to your goal and to not giving up.

That is what I will work on with you in this coaching session today.

I want you to succeed. And I want you to know the feeling of pride in yourself when you get yourself to do what you most want to do.

Despite obstacles and despite slipping back into old patterns.

Commitment is so important! Here’s what you’ll learn today:

  • How to commit with passion even if you’ve failed to reach your goal many times.
  • Why self-belief is not optional.
  • How you might be using your past to predict your future, and why this is a mistake.
  • Are you a perfectionist? I want you to understand how this can hold you back.
  • How to stop arguing with reality over the process you must go through to get what you want.
  • Why some sacrifice is a good thing.
  • And, how to determine which stage of change you’re currently in, and what you can and can’t do in each stage.

There is no perfect time to start working towards a goal, not a Monday, not New Year’s Day, nor the first of any month.

You can begin working towards your goals any day, any time, and any moment.

Episode 103: Why Slowing Down Helps Your Weight Loss

How do you operate? I mean, in your life. Do you rush through everything, trying to get to the end of your ‘to do’ list? Do you pause to smell the roses?

And if you do rush through, at 1.5 speed, how is that working for you? How is it working when you are trying to change how you eat, how you do things, how you deal with challenges?

My guess is that it doesn’t work. I’ve learned the hard way that leaving no time and no space in my schedule doesn’t give me the results I want. Actually, it tends to give me the opposite of what I want.

There needs to be some time and space in your life. To think. This is critical, especially in areas where you want to make changes.

And yet, if you’re anything like me, I can hear you protest:

“There is no time to slow down! My kids! My job! My commitments! My opportunities!”

So, you may continue to run at 1.5 speed, and then beat yourself up, because, guess what? Those changes you want to make? They aren’t happening.

Here’s the deal, my friend. You can do it all and you can have it all. But not all at once. And you need to slow down in order to think. And that is how you create change in your life.
