Ho hum! Another lull in your day. Nothing exciting to do. Not much to think about.

Although eating from boredom was never my thing, SO many of my former clients and Freedom Group members have told me that this is their biggest struggle.

If you’ve ever gone to eat something with no hunger, and seemingly no problem, you know what I mean.

It’s the excitement you are looking for. The pleasure. And yes, that hit of dopamine that you crave.

But wait! This is a habit you don’t want to keep.

Because it will give you a gift you don’t want. All that extra weight. And a strong link between an emotion and the chips, ice cream and Snickers bars.

So, join me as I deconstruct the idea of boredom:

  • What it is.
  • Why you feel it.
  • What it feels like.
  • What creates that feeling of being bored.
  • And a new way to both look at it, and not eat from it.

Episode 145: Should I Have Just a Little? Or None at All?

How often do you struggle with this?

You are offered a piece of chocolate cake. Your mind immediately starts weighing the pros and the cons.

Should you have a little bit of it? Or should you say no?

What will be easier? What will create more of a struggle?

While you know yourself, I wonder if you know what makes this decision easier or harder for you.

The first thing that I want you to look at is your thoughts, of course! If you think ‘one bite and I’m out of control’, that is a hint that you might find it easier to have none than just a little of that chocolate cake.

Your thinking creates your emotions. And if your emotions are deprived and helpless, when thinking about not having a treat, we can look at this and decide what you really want to do.

You’ll learn why having some isn’t better or worse than having none of that tempting food at all. It all depends on what is easier for you. And I’ll show you how to make the whole decision easier.

Are you ready? Will you have a little bit? Or will it be easier to just skip the cake?

Episode 144: How to Deal with Other People’s Moods Without Eating

I used to be totally ruled by the moods of my husband, my two daughters and my friends.

If they were in a good mood, I’d be good. I’d feel relieved and peaceful. But if they weren’t, everything felt up for grabs.

If they were sad, I’d feel sad.

If they were worried, I’d jump right in there on the worry bus with them.

And if they were angry about something, guess who’d be angry too? Me, of course!

Now I have so much more understanding about moods than I used to. I know what creates my own moods. And, I really understand what creates the moods of others around us.

And that’s what I want to share with you today.

Because what you ultimately want to do is to experience your own moods, the good and the bad AND be with someone else and their moods, without running to eat to feel better. This is a step toward ending your emotional eating.

No matter what mood the people around you are in, you have a choice of how you feel. This is our work today.

I know you can relate to this. Let’s face it. We all want to hear what goes on behind the scenes. And the Freedom Group is no exception.

Meet Mary. A lifelong dieter, she has tried just about every eating plan and diet out there. For the past 44 years.

She started early, going from plan to plan and program to program. Always losing weight. But as soon as the programs were done, she went right back to how she used to eat and would always regain her weight.

She was either on a diet or falling off a diet. And along the way, with all the weight lost and gained, she never really learned one big thing: why she overate in the first place.

This cycle of failure made her think that there was something wrong with her. But there wasn’t.

Now Mary knows why she was triggered to overeat and how to stop it. She is much more self-accepting and has more self-confidence.

Social situations used to be a big source of stress, that required lots of planning and worry. No more. She is much more relaxed about her eating in every situation. And no longer stresses about parties and travel and holidays.

The new Mary? She can handle anything. And this is what I wish for you.

Here’s the situation: You’ve already had dinner. You’re not physically hungry. Your body doesn’t need any more food. But you eat anyway. And you have a hard time stopping once you’ve started. Until it’s time for bed.

That’s what I call night-time eating. Eating after your last meal of the day – even though you aren’t hungry.

So why do you eat like this at the end of your day? And how do you start to unravel this behavior?

We’ll talk about the whole chain of events that lead from a trigger to your overeating after dinner. I’ll show you how to make sense of your specific triggers and what to do about them.

Several years ago, I struggled. With just about everything.

Some days I felt ‘fat’ and other days I was content with my body. Some days I struggled with my eating and other days I just ate naturally. Sometimes I felt attractive, and other days I hated the way I looked. And my moods! I never knew how I’d wake up, feeling up one day and down the next. And I had no idea that I could ever feel a sense of control or understanding of these moods.

My self-image fluctuated wildly. And now I know that this happened because my thoughts about myself were fluctuating wildly too.

I had no compass to tell me the truth. How I really looked and felt and what was real and what was just my story. This takes perspective and being objective about yourself.

Sometimes you have a friend who serves as your mirror. Being with her lets you see yourself as the rest of the world sees you. And then you can be objective about what’s really you.

But sometimes you need the objectivity of a professional, who can see you and help you see yourself. In truth.

Today we’re talking about how to gain some objectivity in how you view life and yourself.

Episode 126: The Talk in Your Mind that Drives You Crazy

Have you ever thought that you are driving yourself crazy? If you step back and listen to all the things you think about your eating and your weight, it’s not surprising that you might think that.

Imagine the jumble of thoughts you’re thinking about your eating. Why am I eating this? What should I be eating? Why can’t I stick to my plan? What’s wrong with me?

And the list goes on and on and on. It’s enough to drive you crazy. But wait! You are the one thinking those thoughts. You are the one creating that swirl of confusion.

Now, I’m not blaming you. And you shouldn’t blame yourself either. But I think it helps to know that if your thoughts are creating a mess of confusion, then your thoughts are the way out of that confusion.

We all talk to ourselves. You are no exception. I want your self-talk to be honest, but compassionate. And productive.

I want you to be able to think your way out of the mess you’re in. This is doable. And this is what you will learn.
