Episode 174: Why You Need to Remember the Pain of Overeating

Think about the last time you slipped and went off your eating plan. We’re not about diets here, but we are talking about making a plan for yourself and then keeping your promise to yourself. Your goal is to honor your plan.

And when you don’t keep your promise to yourself, that is considered a slip.

So, what happens when you slip? Essentially you are enjoying the moment, and conveniently putting your goals in the way back part of your mind.

And, you are conveniently forgetting how bad you felt on the last overeating episode.

Now remember in Episode 171, How to Hold Yourself Accountable, we talked about making sure you didn’t move on from a slip without learning from it. No self-beating, but definitely learning from what you did.

What we’re talking about here today is why it’s important to keep the memory of the pain you felt when you slipped… in the front of your mind.

Do I want you to feel bad? Of course not. But sometimes we need to remember our pain, so we learn from it. So we know what we don’t want again. And we use it to help ourselves keep our promises.

So, before you let the pain of your latest overeating episode slip into the back of your memory, write it down. Let’s remember while it’s fresh. I want you to be sure to have some ammunition the next time you think: “Oh, what’s the big deal? I can always start again tomorrow.”

We are focusing on the pain. So that you can stop creating the pain. Go back and listen to Episode 171 so you can put all this together. Hold yourself accountable. Get clear on the pain you’re creating when you allow your brain to talk you into a slip. And let’s prevent it from happening again.

Episode 173: Stop Stopping to Get What You Want!

Are you in the habit of falling down and not getting up? I mean when you are trying to accomplish a new thing, and it’s hard. You fail. You feel bad. And then you talk yourself out of doing it at all.

Today we are going to talk frankly about what it really takes to change. To transform yourself. From where you are now and from how you eat and care for yourself now, to where you want to be.

Change takes time, yes. But it also takes a lot of failures. Yes, painful, humbling, uncomfortable failures. It takes going through them and getting back up and keeping on keeping on.

It does not take quitting, giving up, and licking your wounds.

In order to create real change, you need to expect to fail and keep going. Without stopping.

Does that sound harsh? It doesn’t have to sound harsh or feel harsh. It’s just reality.

Doing something new means you will fail often. If you take those fails as a signal to stop, you are going to stay exactly where you are. And I know you, my friend. You want more. You want better. And you want to be the best version of you.

Do you ever wake up in the middle of the night, looking for food? Maybe you’re actually hungry, or maybe it’s just your habit.

In the moment, it feels like you have no choice but to follow this strong urge. And so, you do.

In the moment you don’t give it a lot of thought; there’s just this super-strong urge. And you probably go back to sleep after you’ve eaten. But the next morning is a different story, as you are wracked with guilt and regret.

Feeling bad and frustrated won’t help. But I do want you to do something about this, so it doesn’t become an even stronger habit.

In this coaching session I will tell you exactly what it might look and feel like so you can know if middle-of-the-night eating is what you are struggling with.

Then we will talk about all the possible reasons you might be doing this. We’ll talk about how it started and what to do about it.

This is a habit you definitely don’t want to keep around; there’s no doubt about that. But rest assured that this night eating habit, like all others, can be changed. And I will show you how, right here. See you in the session!

Episode 163: Are You Rebelling Against Yourself When You Overeat?

Do you think if someone had a way of ‘making you’ do something, that you’d be so happy? Because then you’d really stick to your eating plan or go to the gym.

But then, when you do join a diet program or hire that personal trainer, you still find yourself quitting?

If you do, you are not alone.

And as silly as this might sound, you are really rebelling against yourself. You’re the one who wants to achieve something, to change a habit, or to just show up differently.

But when you set things up to do just that, you find yourself thinking things like:

  • I don’t care!
  • I don’t have to!
  • No one can make me do that!

And the next thing you know you are off your plan, headed in the opposite direction of your goal.

This is rebellion at it’s worst, because you are actually rebelling only against yourself. Hmmm. Not exactly what you planned to do, right?

In this coaching session we will take a good look at how you might be rebelling against yourself, why you might be in the habit of doing that, and, of course, how to stop doing it!

Sometimes we don’t pay enough attention to what we’ve learned and then the lesson is lost. We hear it but we don’t give it enough time and focus, so before we get a chance to practice that lesson, it’s gone.

That’s why I am taking time now so we can review 5 of the key weight loss ideas we talked about this year.

1. Episode 116: How to Believe You Can Lose Weight for Good

How can you believe in yourself when you have no evidence that you can do this thing? I’ll show you how to create the belief and practice it, so it becomes a part of who you are and how you act.

2. Episode 127: Why Self-Care Helps You Lose Weight

You might think that you’ll take good care of yourself after you reach your goal weight. But this doesn’t work. You need self-love all along the journey, and I’ll show you why and how to do it.

3. Episode 148: Do You Love Food too Much?

You probably know by now that I will tell you the truth. And if you think that you just love food, and that’s why you carry extra weight, well my friend, I’m sorry to burst your bubble. When we really love something, we don’t need to overdo it. Just the right amount is enough. So, let’s drop the ‘more is better’ mantra and learn how to really love your food.

4. Episode 149: Bumps in the Road to Weight Loss

Have you ever thought that if your life were easier and smoother, it would be easier for you to lose weight? Well, no one I know has a totally smooth, easy life. We all have bumps in the road. And the sooner you learn to embrace this reality, the easier your weight loss will be.

5. Episode 151: Why Hunger Can Feel Scary

You probably know that panicky feeling I’m talking about. You start getting hungry. You know that you can get to food if you really need to. But instead, you start to panic. What if you don’t get to eat in time? What if you get overly hungry? What if you can’t get what you need when you need it?

You will survive, I’m sure of it. But it takes practice to convince your brain that you are okay, even when you’re hungry. I will show you how to feed yourself when you need to but learn how to stop feeling like it’s an emergency.

That means more food, more temptations to ditch your eating plan, more family drama and more worry about eating.

Although eating from boredom was never my thing, SO many of my former clients and Freedom Group members have told me that this is their biggest struggle.

If you’ve ever gone to eat something with no hunger, and seemingly no problem, you know what I mean.

It’s the excitement you are looking for. The pleasure. And yes, that hit of dopamine that you crave.

But wait! This is a habit you don’t want to keep.

Because it will give you a gift you don’t want. All that extra weight. And a strong link between an emotion and the chips, ice cream and Snickers bars.

So, join me as I deconstruct the idea of boredom:

  • What it is.
  • Why you feel it.
  • What it feels like.
  • What creates that feeling of being bored.
  • And a new way to both look at it, and not eat from it.
