Episode 120: The Four Stages of Weight Loss

Are you frustrated because you can’t seem to stop eating?

I’d like you to take a more detailed look at these times when you can’t stop eating.

Because the way I think about it, you may be making progress that you just can’t see yet.

There are four stages of losing weight. And you need to get through all four of them to be able to eat the way you’d like to eat.

And, if you know about the four stages, you’ll be able to see where you are, understand why you’re there, and keep moving forward.

So, what are these stages?

  1. Stage 1 is when you’ve just overeaten, and you realize what has happened when it’s all over.
  2. Stage 2 is when you’re in the middle of overeating, you see what you are doing, and yet you just can’t get yourself to stop.
  3. Stage 3 is when you are able to see what you’re about to do. You haven’t started overeating yet. You are able to step back and see what is happening. And still, you can’t stop the habit. You eat anyway.
  4. And finally, Stage 4 is when you’re about to overeat, you see what is happening, and yes! You are able to stop yourself! This is big!

So, what we’re going to talk about today are these four stages.

I will tell you why you’re in each one. You’ll learn what you’re likely to do and think at each stage. And, I will help you get a good perspective of where you are, and what’s ahead, so you don’t give up.

You probably don’t give it a second thought when you shrug off the promises you made to yourself.

Promises like not eating when you’re upset, eating when you’re hungry, or giving yourself a few minutes a day to check in with yourself.

Or maybe you do pay attention to your promises, but still just can’t seem to keep them.

Well, keeping your commitment to you is the way to make progress with your weight loss goals. It’s the way to do what you say you’ll do. And all those little steps add up to big changes.

Episode 118: There is No Hurry

Are you in a perpetual hurry to lose weight? Does that work for you?

My educated guess is that it does not work. Hurrying makes you feel panicky and fearful and worried. It makes taking intelligent action hard, if not impossible.

I know that you’re probably in the habit of looking for the quickest fix. We all are these days.

But that quick fix, when it comes to weight loss, simply does not help you get what you want. And what you want is permanent change.

Permanent change comes from changing how you view things and changing your thinking. Then you can more easily change what you do.

If you force yourself to rush and take fast action, you will fall down and likely not get up for a while. And that will make your progress even slower.

So, hurry not only isn’t likely to get you what you want, but it doesn’t feel good. And in order to lose weight permanently, the whole process needs to feel good, so that you will stick with it.

If you’re willing to even consider rejecting your habits of hurried thinking and hurried actions, pull up a comfy chair and come into this coaching session with me.

Let’s take apart your habit of always being in a hurry for weight loss. It will come. But let’s not let hurry stop you because it’s not a sustainable way to live.

Episode 117: How to Stop Quitting When You’re Not Perfect

Have you ever failed in your weight loss efforts, and in your desire to leave this whole problem behind you?

Of course, you have! Everyone has.

But the even bigger question is: What do you do when you fail? Do you quit? Do you tell yourself you’ll never get this?

If you’re like most of my clients and members of The Freedom Group, that is exactly what you do.

And the problem with that is each time you quit, because you’ve failed, the going gets rougher.

It gets harder and harder to move forward and make progress. You’ve had a fail. You’ve called yourself names and beat yourself up. And now what?

You want to start again. But each fail and each start over… everything is harder.

The real work to do is stick it out. Get up when you fall down. Know that failing is part of growing. In fact, one of my members said this on a call today: Failure is the bridge to success.

Don’t you love that vision? I do.

You need to stick with it and get over the hump when things get challenging and keep going.

Just keep going. Stop quitting. You can do this. Get over that hump.

Episode 116: How to Believe You Can Lose Weight for Good

You make a plan and you’re committed.

But you have nagging doubts that you can accomplish your weight loss goals.

And of course, you do!

You’ve never done this before, and you have no evidence that you can do it.

You’re thinking, I’ll believe it when I see it.

So how can you move forward and get where you want to go if you don’t believe in yourself?

The answer is simple.

You create the beliefs you want to have. And then you practice the heck out of them.

Yes, you can choose what you believe.

I know your current beliefs feel right. They feel like the truth. So even if they give you some not-so-great feelings, you assume they are just the truth.

Here’s the scoop: your beliefs are simply thoughts. Stories in your mind. And you’ve given these thoughts so much attention, and so much emotion, that over time, they become very strong. And very accessible.

And eventually, they simply feel true to you.

The good news is that even your long-held beliefs can be examined and replaced with beliefs that are more congruent with you, your life, and your desires.

So, let’s get to work on uncovering and shining the light on those beliefs of yours. The ones that stop you in your tracks every time you try to break out of your old patterns.

And then, you get to choose.

Episode 115: Why it’s So Hard to Ask for Help with Your Weight Loss

I’ll bet you are pretty independent. And able to take care of many different things.

So, when there’s an area of your life that isn’t going the way you’d like it to go, you are surprised.

How can you be successful in most of your life, but not in the realm of your eating and your weight?

This is not uncommon. But what separates those who figure out what the problem is and solve their weight issue from those who don’t… is asking for help.

If you think it’s a sign of weakness or a sign that you are too needy, you’re wrong.

Asking for help is one of the smartest things you can do. It will help you get what you want faster and in an easier way.

But so often you may feel shame or just plain discomfort asking someone else to talk to you, give you support, or feedback, or even just sit and listen to you.

These acts require that you be vulnerable with someone. And it’s the act of being vulnerable that allows others to see the real you. You may think that if you revealed your weaknesses to someone else, you’d feel terrible.

In reality, we feel good when we can let it all hang out, with the right person, of course.

Think about an area where you could use some help. Think about your history around asking for help. And now, come into the present moment.

You can do this. Ask for what you need. Be brave.
