Episode 159: How to Know When You’re Really Hungry

When was the last time you checked to see if you were really hungry before you ate?

I thought so!

My guess is that you are a bit on autopilot when you eat.

It’s noon; time for lunch. It’s 6:00 pm; time for dinner. Someone offers you a treat… mm mm, that looks good!

And so, your day goes on and so many eating opportunities come up. You make decision after decision to eat based on how you feel emotionally, whether others are eating, whether it looks good or even whether you feel ‘deserving’ of something.

But when you eat, one of the main prerequisites is hunger. Physical hunger. And without that, you are giving your body something it may not be asking for.

When you do this all the time, you are either gaining weight you don’t need, or maintaining a higher weight than you really need or want.

So what’s the solution?

Join me today for a lesson on what hunger is, what it should feel like, and how it differs from an emotional urge to eat.

Once you get this, you’ll be able to know exactly when to start eating and that’s one third of the eating equation:

  • When to start eating.
  • What to eat.
  • And when to stop eating.

Sometimes we don’t pay enough attention to what we’ve learned and then the lesson is lost. We hear it but we don’t give it enough time and focus, so before we get a chance to practice that lesson, it’s gone.

That’s why I am taking time now so we can review 5 of the key weight loss ideas we talked about this year.

1. Episode 116: How to Believe You Can Lose Weight for Good

How can you believe in yourself when you have no evidence that you can do this thing? I’ll show you how to create the belief and practice it, so it becomes a part of who you are and how you act.

2. Episode 127: Why Self-Care Helps You Lose Weight

You might think that you’ll take good care of yourself after you reach your goal weight. But this doesn’t work. You need self-love all along the journey, and I’ll show you why and how to do it.

3. Episode 148: Do You Love Food too Much?

You probably know by now that I will tell you the truth. And if you think that you just love food, and that’s why you carry extra weight, well my friend, I’m sorry to burst your bubble. When we really love something, we don’t need to overdo it. Just the right amount is enough. So, let’s drop the ‘more is better’ mantra and learn how to really love your food.

4. Episode 149: Bumps in the Road to Weight Loss

Have you ever thought that if your life were easier and smoother, it would be easier for you to lose weight? Well, no one I know has a totally smooth, easy life. We all have bumps in the road. And the sooner you learn to embrace this reality, the easier your weight loss will be.

5. Episode 151: Why Hunger Can Feel Scary

You probably know that panicky feeling I’m talking about. You start getting hungry. You know that you can get to food if you really need to. But instead, you start to panic. What if you don’t get to eat in time? What if you get overly hungry? What if you can’t get what you need when you need it?

You will survive, I’m sure of it. But it takes practice to convince your brain that you are okay, even when you’re hungry. I will show you how to feed yourself when you need to but learn how to stop feeling like it’s an emergency.

Do you ever sit down and reflect on how things are going for you? I don’t just mean a brief moment of lamenting about something that isn’t working, or a few seconds of a pat on your own back.

I mean literally taking some time at the end of the year, like now, to dive deep into how things are for you.

When you do this, you might find yourself not wanting to dive deeper. You might see yourself putting a quick label on things… “This was a great year!” Or… “This was an awful year!”

You can do better, and it’s worth doing. Because seeing where you are is the first step to changing where you are.

Aren’t you tired of just setting goals to lose XX pounds by next year? I know that this doesn’t really motivate most people.

So, let’s take a different approach. Yes, I want you to look at this past year. And I want you to answer this: What HAS to stop? What are you fed up with?

Episode 153: Where Will You Be this Time Next Year?

I’ll bet that you’re afraid to dream about what you really want. And I know why.

When you think about your life and your body, and what you’re happy with and what you’re not so happy with, you feel stuck.

The things you want to change feel out of your reach. If you haven’t been able to change them so far, why would now be different?

So, if I ask you what you wish for, what could be different for you next year, your mind goes to a safe place. It doesn’t want to be challenged and uncomfortable. As much as you want to change, it’s easier to stay stuck than to risk yet another failure.

Looking at where you will be a year from now is hard for you. You don’t want to get your hopes up. You don’t want to get excited about losing weight and eating without all the drama. Because there’s no evidence that you will be able to do things differently.

But today, I am challenging you. I want to help you change. And the way we will do that is by looking ahead and creating a vision of what you want.

Not just what you want to weigh. But how you want to be, to live, to show up in the world next year.

Episode 151: Why Hunger Can Feel Scary

You’re hungry. You start to feel panicky. Will you be able to eat soon? What type of food will be available? What if there isn’t enough?

Next thing you know, you’re eating way more than your body needs. But you can’t help it. It’s scary to be hungry.

Or maybe this is what you experience… you’re hungry and you immediately respond by shutting that down. You’re used to dieting and that means you ignore that hunger signal. You can’t eat now – you’re not supposed to. And that’s scary too.

There are so many reasons hunger signals cause you to feel scared, out of control, or panicky.

Today, let’s take a closer look at the thoughts and feelings that come up when you feel physical hunger.

And we’ll talk about why it’s so hard to even wait for hunger in the first place!

We’ll talk about the difference between food restriction and food deprivation. And why you don’t need to worry about either once you learn how to eat like a natural eater.

I’ll explain why hunger is not an emergency – even if your lower brain is telling you otherwise.

We’ll finish up with strategies for handling hunger signals so that you don’t panic, and you don’t respond in ways that derail you from your goals.

You can learn to experience hunger without feeling like it’s an emergency that causes you fear and panic. I’ll show you why it’s so important to learn this and how to do it.
