I’m Not the Life of the Party!

Life of the PartyHaving reached a certain age, after much consideration, therapy and coaching, I have come to recognize certain truths about myself.

When I was younger, I viewed these truths as faults.

Negatives.

Things to definitely work on, as in my goals for the year and New Year’s resolutions.

Now that I am mellowing and tuning into my own wisdom, I realize that these ‘facts about Cookie’ are not only NOT faults, but I have come to look at them as somewhat endearing qualities that I possess.

I can laugh at myself more, much to the distress of my daughters, who tend to be easily embarrassed.

So here’s what I’ve learned and have come to accept and yes, even love about myself:

Ok, so I’m not the life of the party. Any party. No matter what I wear or how I get ready. Never have been and never will be. 

But I know that I’m really comfortable and do well in small groups with intimate conversation.

I’m a latecomer to technology, social media and all things related to my computer.

But I’ve cobbled together a real business doing what I love, and learning or getting help in my weak spots.

I’m a certified introvert. I’ll never get up for karaoke, so please don’t challenge me.

But I’m an intense, intuitive listener. I’ve learned to hear between the lines. That trumps my singing ability every day of the week.

There are certain subjects that make my eyes glaze over and drool come out of the corner of my mouth. In the past, I’d work really hard to get better at these things.

Now I leave them to someone else, someone who comes more naturally to them. And I focus my energy on my own genius subjects. I’m good without being an expert at everything.

What do I attribute this maturity, this relaxing of standards, and this self-acceptance to?

Age.
Growth.
Work.
And love.

It feels so much better to know who I am.

What it is that makes me special.

So, I’ll never be the life of the party.

I have a feeling I wouldn’t look that good with a lampshade on my head, anyway.

Episode 52: The Top 8 Concepts About Weight Loss and Eating that You Learned This Year: What You Need to Know to Succeed

It’s hard to believe it’s been a year! This is our 52nd episode of Weight Loss Made Real and I hope you’ve enjoyed your coaching sessions.

With so much material covered, it may be hard for you to organize it all and try to follow the concepts.

So in this episode, I’ve put together what I consider your top 8, most important coaching sessions and concepts. You might want to go back and listen to these again, as you decide what you want to choose to focus on in the New Year.

Here we go with your top 8 concepts:

Concept #1: Clear your path. Learn from your past mistakes. This is covered in Episode 2, Let’s Clear Your Path to Weight Loss Success.

Concept #2: Connect with your body. Here you’ll learn how to eat like a naturally slim person, and you can find this in Episode 3 (How to eat like a naturally slim woman) and Episode 6 (When to start eating and when to stop).

Concept #3: Challenge your thoughts. It’s mind management time! Go back and listen to Episode 7 (Managing your mind to end your emotional eating) and Episode 13 (Understanding and ending your emotional eating).

Concept #4: Check your habits. Your habits either help you or hurt you. Let’s look at what you are doing and what you’d rather be doing. You’ll find this in Episode 11 (Your eating habits).

Concept #5: Working on Project Y.O.U. Do you remember why it makes so much sense to work on your eating, your weight, and yourself in general as if it were a project? Take a listen to Episode 5, called Working on Project You.

Concept #6: Cherish yourself! You’ve heard me talk about self-care, self-worth, and self-esteem. All different ways of saying LOVE! Go back to Episode 9 and listen to How to care for yourself so you can do the right thing.

Concept #7 is all about creating your own tool kit. This is not from a published podcast, but is coming in a future episode. How to put all the things you’ve learned into a tool kit that you can pull out and use as needed to get through Project YOU.

And last, is Concept #8: Banish Your Binges. Here I remind you of some of the things I talked about with Kathryn Hansen, of Brain Over Binge, to help you get rid of those life-disrupting urges to binge. You can find our talk in Episode 8, and can apply what you learn there to binge eating of course, but also to emotional eating and general overeating.

Episode 47: How to Divide Your Day to Manage Your Weight!

Do you ever feel like your day is running amok from the moment you wake up until the moment you crash on your pillow at night?

So many women just like you go, go, go all day long and feel like they have no control over their day. It stands to reason that if you think you have no control over your day, then chances of sticking to your eating plan are slim to none.

In order to be able to think and take a breath between activities and obligations and even remember what you’re trying to do, it helps to divide your day into sections and let yourself flow from one to the next.

And the key is intentionality.

Some days throw the unexpected at us. All day. But most days, even if they are hectic, have a rhythm to them.

Here’s what you’ll learn today about managing your day so you can stay focused on your eating goals:

  • Ease into your day with a morning routine, including deciding how you want your morning to go. And who you want to be as your day moves ahead.
  • Once you get to work, whatever your definition of work is, again, check in and decide what you want to happen and how you’d like to respond to things.
  • Do you consciously think about what’s coming up on the calendar? You should. Not in dread, but in the spirit of being in charge.
  • When you get home in the evening, again, build in a transition period to ease into your down time. Even if you have a lot more you’d like to accomplish.
  • How do you want to feel when you go to sleep? Do you know how to accomplish that feeling?

I am going to teach you how to mentally break your day in sections, and guide you to consciously choose how you want each part to go. And how you want to show up in each of those parts.
