Episode 79: Why You May Fear Regaining the Weight You Lose

Episode 79: Why You May Fear Regaining the Weight You Lose

Welcome back, my friend!

Imagine that you’ve done it! You’ve held on long enough to change the way you are eating. You’ve stopped eating emotionally. Maybe you’ve been resisting those urges to binge.

Regaining podcast 79

But oddly enough, you don’t feel confident and proud. You feel nervous and insecure.

Why? Because you may have used sheer willpower to accomplish your feat, and that isn’t enough.

That isn’t enough to change from the inside out. To change deeply enough that you do walk around feeling relaxed and proud and confident.

And my goal for you is that if someone asks how you eat or what you do for yourself, you might find it hard to explain, because these days you think: That’s just how I live!

So let’s talk about changing from the inside out, so you don’t fear regaining weight you lost, or slipping back into old habits.

I will see you in the coaching session.

Episode 73: Why I Don’t Believe Your Weight Loss Excuses, and Why You Shouldn’t Either!

Tuesday, May 23rd, 2017

Episode 73: Why I Don’t Believe Your Weight Loss Excuses, and Why You Shouldn’t Either!

What are your favorite excuses? I’m sure you’re a bit indignant right now, as in: I don’t have any favorite excuses!

But let me assure you, you definitely do!

Excuses podcast 73

If you constantly start and stop your weight loss efforts, and your efforts to stop bingeing and take better care of yourself, the ‘stop’ part comes about because of your excuses.

Excuses are made-up stories you tell yourself about why you can’t do something.

I know you don’t really want to believe them. But you do.

In this coaching session, I’m going to show you what an excuse is, and how it’s different from an obstacle.

We’re going to talk about why and how your brain falls in love with your excuses, and doesn’t want to let them go. Even though they hurt you.

If this sounds like the bad boyfriend from 7th grade who you wanted to dump but couldn’t, sit down and listen.

I’m going to show you how to break up with those old harmful excuses. And in the process, find your way around any obstacles that ARE real.

Let’s dive in!

Episode 70: Why Do I Keep Saying “Screw It!”?

Tuesday, May 2nd, 2017

Episode 70: Why Do I Keep Saying “Screw It!”?

Welcome back! I hope you are enjoying these coaching sessions as much as I am.

Screw it podcast 70

Have you ever reached the point in your eating and weight loss journey, where things aren’t going well, and you say: “The heck with it!”

Or, “I just can’t do this!” Or, “I’ll just start tomorrow.” Or, “Something must be wrong with me.”

All these thoughts have one big thing in common: they stop you from moving forward and take you totally off track. They keep you stuck in a pattern of failure.

All are versions of screw it!

These are habitual negative ways of thinking when things don’t go as planned. And they all prevent you from achieving what you want most: peaceful eating and, for many of you, weight loss as well.

So today, I’m going to coach you about this common thought of screw it. We’ll talk about when it comes up, what it might sound like in your own mind, why you think it at all, and, finally, how to stop saying, “Who cares!” and what to think instead.

I will help you stop what constantly derails you: your seemingly innocent thoughts.

I will see you in the session!

Episode 65: Did You Just Overeat? How to Compensate Without Punishing Yourself

Tuesday, March 28th, 2017

Episode 65: Did You Just Overeat? How to Compensate Without Punishing Yourself

We all  overeat sometimes, especially on our way toward learning how to eat naturally.

The important thing to look at when you DO overeat is what you do immediately after.

Overeat podcast 65

Do you punish yourself? Do you restrict your eating to ‘make up’ for what you just overate?

You may very well be sabotaging yourself without realizing it!

Restricting your eating following an overeating episode messes with your survival instincts.

It reinforces a habit that is exactly what you want to stop doing!

Listen in and join me in this coaching session as I teach you why it’s so important not to restrict your eating after you’ve overeaten.

If you regularly swing between overeating and then under-eating, this session is for you!

Episode 64: How to Stop Making the Same Mistakes

Tuesday, March 21st, 2017

Episode 64: How to Stop Making the Same Mistakes

Do you keep making the same eating mistakes? Over and over again?

Mistakes podcast 64

You know how bad it feels. You see what you’re doing. You see it happening. It’s almost like watching a movie, starring you.

And you feel helpless to step in and make a change.

Here’s how to do it. Here is the process you’ll take once you understand how change unfolds.

From unaware.

To aware but without responsibility.

From taking responsibility yet still doing what you don’t want to be doing.

And then to, voila, change!

When you see things differently, you will act differently.

Click here for a copy of the poem I love that so beautifully illustrates this concept.

Which chapter do you see yourself in? Does it help to know what’s next?

Let me know how you do.

Look at the Big Picture

Thursday, January 26th, 2017

Look at big pictureMaybe you’re one of my readers because you want to lose weight.

So many women do.

But you know in your heart that food, eating and weight are just pieces of the whole big picture of your life.

And if we stay on the surface, and just focus on the pieces, we’re not really solving the bigger puzzle.

Instead, looking on the surface, you may have found the answer to a question like, ‘How do I not raid the refrigerator this weekend when I visit my mother?’

But you didn’t find the answer to the Big Question, which is, ‘How do I lose this extra weight once and for all AND lose the whole problem?’

You don’t want a quick fix.

You want a real, lasting solution.

Who wants to be dealing with the same problem over and over again?

So many of us tend to look at solving the weight loss puzzle as a series of separate, unrelated situations:

  • If only I could learn how to not gain weight over the Christmas break.
  • How can I entertain for work this week and still be true to my eating plan?
  • I need to learn to stop snacking when my kids are moody after school today, when I’m not really hungry.

While each of these situations occurs frequently for many of my clients, it’s not each individual situation that’s our stumbling block.

Our stumbling blocks are the thoughts and patterns that keep showing up and ruling our lives.

And it’s our reactions to these repetitive habits that allow us to take that first unneeded bite, and not stop until the food is gone.

Stop reacting.

Step back from your life.

What seems to come up over and over again for you that derails your best efforts to lose weight?

Well, once you have identified the patterns, start creating some strategies.

Make your own rules for yourself.

You’re in charge.

You are not at the mercy of the world.

Things don’t just happen to you.

Just step back and think.

Put away the magnifying glass and look at the big picture.

Plan.

Strategize.

Prepare for what you know will show up.

Create personalized rules for yourself.

And get back in charge.

What Does Your Extra Weight Look Like?

Thursday, November 24th, 2016

extra weightWhen you’re carrying some extra weight on your body, it’s easy to get used to it. You develop coping mechanisms that allow you to function without being painfully aware of what’s bothering you every minute of the day.

Of course, at certain times you’re more aware of it than usual.

  • Like when you’re shopping for clothes and looking in the dressing room mirror.
  • Or when you’re worried about fitting into an airplane seat without spilling over into your neighbor’s seat.
  • Or when you get winded going up a simple flight of stairs.

But on an everyday basis, if you spend most of your day sitting at a desk, you may not be aware of what you are literally carrying around all the time.

I think it’s good to give yourself a wakeup call. And become sensitive to what it means to have an extra 10 or 30 or 75 pounds on your body.

Look around your house or go to the grocery store and pick out some items that weigh close to the same amount of weight you’d like to lose.

Think of a bag of kitty litter… pick up that 10 or 20 pound bag to see what it feels like.

Look at four sticks of butter, a mere pound. Picture yourself having 40 of those sticks, 10 pounds, stuffed into your pockets all day long.

I’m no wimp but the bags my dog’s food comes in, 25 pounds each, are heavy to lug into my car trunk.

Now, visualize that all day, every day you have extra weight on your body, you are ‘carrying’ something extra with you all the time. Day and night. Up and down the stairs. In all your social interactions. At work.

It’s extra.

You don’t need it.

Physically, things would be easier if you dropped your extra load.

Left it by the curb.

Let go of what was slowing you down and not adding to your life.

Carrying around extra weight all day every day packs a big cost.

Are you willing to keep paying?

This week, I challenge you to look and find some physical equivalent of the weight you’d like to lose.

And put it in front of you.

Carry it around for a period of time.

Become very aware of what that extra weight feels like on your body, and how good it feels to put it down.

Conversely, as you begin to release your body’s extra weight, it helps to look at the physical equivalent of what you’ve lost, to remind yourself of what you are no longer carrying around.

And how much better you feel.

Sometimes we all need a reminder of what we get used to.

We stop seeing it.

We can’t feel it.

Making it physical makes it real again.

And that helps us have the motivation to do something about it.

Stop Running From Discomfort

Thursday, July 14th, 2016

Mother_DaughterXSmall-300x199Recently I found myself in an old familiar setting.

One of my teenage daughters had come home from school in a mood. Let’s just say, it was one of those teenage moods.

I was in the kitchen with her, and suddenly realized that I was mindlessly snacking.

I did a quick check-in with myself.

No hunger.

And I realized that just like that I had slipped into an old pattern… I started to feel uncomfortable and immediately started eating to remedy the discomfort.

Although most of that behavior is gone for me, it still occasionally rears its head.

And it’s good to notice that even after doing lots of work, sometimes you react with old patterns.

So here’s the story:

When you begin to feel uncomfortable, about anything you’re thinking about, notice the feeling coming over you.

Pause.

And then welcome the discomfort.

It’s here to teach you something.

To give you the inside path to your thoughts.

And only after you allow yourself to feel the feeling, can you go inside and work on it. Change it. Or not.

But first you have to feel it.

Then you can figure out what’s going on.

If you eat you will smother the feeling, and lose touch with the thought.

So grab the opportunity.

Stop running from discomfort.
