Every Bite Counts

Tuesday, February 7th, 2017

Woman eating bite size portion

“But I’m only eating healthy stuff,” some of my clients protest. “And I can’t lose weight! I’m stuck!”

Great quality, healthy food.

But.

It doesn’t really matter what you’re eating if you’re eating more than your body needs.

We all have systems in our body that aim to keep us at equilibrium.

Balance.

We get signals when we’re hungry, and then we eat to stock up on fuel.

We get signals when we’re no longer hungry, and we stop eating.

When we stop listening to these little, sometimes subtle signals, we take ourselves out of balance.

Out of equilibrium.

We get too hungry or too full.

When we get too hungry we usually compensate by overeating, swinging to the other end of the pendulum.

Geneen Roth used to say that for every restrictive diet we go on there is an equally strong and opposite binge waiting in the wings.

I agree.

So what I see a lot, in between the extreme restriction and the constant overeating, is that some of us are stealth nibblers.

Little tastes of different things. A bite here and a bite there.

Some high quality fuel, some junk.

It doesn’t matter.

What matters is that when we are in this nibble habit, we are eating unconsciously.

My own specialty is passing the kitchen to get water to bring to my office and grabbing a handful of almonds. Healthy, right?

Or after a meal, I’ll grab some dried cherries, or dried papaya. Better than pie, I’ll think.

We pass the kitchen and grab what we left on the counter.

We don’t want to make a phone call, so we open the fridge and have a few bites of leftovers.

We’re tired in the afternoon so we make an apple and peanut butter plate.

But we’re not hungry.

What happens when we eat these little things and our body isn’t signaling us to eat?

We waste the food.

We waste it in our bodies.

Our bodies aren’t asking for a refueling, so we take it in and having no need for it we just store it as fat.

Just that simple.

So it doesn’t matter if it’s baby carrots and hummus or your kids’ French fries… if you’re not hungry, you don’t need it.

And if you eat it, it counts.

If it’s not water, it counts.

I challenge you, for one day, to notice every single bite you put into your mouth.

It doesn’t matter what it is.

Vacations and Parties and Travel, Oh My!

Thursday, September 15th, 2016

Do you do well managing your eating and self-care Monday through Friday, but get thrown for a loop on special occasions and vacations?

vacations

Many of us lead full, busy lives filled with restaurant meals, big events and some vacations. Our lives are literally filled with special occasions.

To manage their everyday life, my clients develop a plan for eating, taking care of themselves, for movement, even for how to think to get their best feelings.

Yet sometimes, they’ll feel stress about how to handle an upcoming business trip, or the snacks at church after services, a big wedding or a dream vacation.

Their stress comes from telling themselves: This isn’t normal.

It’s not my 9 to 5 routine.

I won’t be able to handle this without losing control.

How can I maintain my eating plan if I go on this cruise?

Here’s the deal:

It is normal.

It’s a different version of normal.

Just like the weekend is a different version of the workweek.

If you are lucky enough to have a full life with lots of events and occasions and celebrations, don’t put down your fork.

But do put down your fear.

These events are special but don’t have to be difficult.

They are just variations.

So embrace them.

Anticipate them.

Plan for them.

And while you certainly want to enjoy them, you want to be guided by your own internal thermostat.

Your own internal rules.

One of my clients calls it her own GPS system.

So no matter where you are and who is offering you the taste delight of a lifetime, you always check in with your own inner wisdom first.

This doesn’t mean you can’t or shouldn’t enjoy a special food treat at an event.

It just means that you should treat it like you’d treat any other decision you make for yourself.

  • Am I hungry?
  • Is this a worthy choice for me?
  • Will I feel better or worse after I eat this?

You get to decide.

So enjoy your full, busy and very social life.

Enjoy its irregularities and its contrast from every day to special.

But know that the special events are also just another part of your life.

And you always get to choose how you want to be in every situation you encounter.

So don’t panic.

Enjoy!

Ep 27 The 5 D’s of Busting Through Your Overeating, Emotional Eating and Binge Eating

Tuesday, July 5th, 2016

Episode 27: The 5 D’s of Busting Through Your Overeating, Emotional Eating and Binge Eating

Busting Through Overeating Podcast 27

Have you ever faced down some food that you really wanted to eat and just gave in and ate it? Even if you weren’t hungry?

Did you know there are other options to overeating?

Yes, I’m talking about strategies for overeating. Strategies that can help you put some space in between you and the food in that all-important moment of decision.

Here they are. Taken straight from one of my most-loved worksheets, which you can get right here along with other goodies.

In this coaching session, here are some things you’ll learn to make better choices in that moment of decision:

  • What happens to your brain when you’re in a food situation?
  • How does your desire for a food in certain situations turn into a hard to break habit?
  • Why it’s just SO easy to give in and eat, even if you’re not hungry.
  • What the true goal is when you’re faced with an urge to eat.
  • Some great techniques to use right in that dangerous moment.
  • When you distract yourself in order to not eat, what is the true goal of doing this?
  • What are some things you can do to use the D of Distraction?
  • Why the D of Delay works, and how long you should use it for. (Hint: don’t do it for 10 minutes.)
  • The third D, Distance, can give you time to access your true desires, and say no to something you only want in that moment. Know how to do this?
  • The D of Download: why getting those confusing, conflicting thoughts out of your head and onto paper (or your computer) is so much better than ruminating in your mind.
  • And the fifth D, Decide. Even if you do eat something you are trying not to, it’s so much better to make a clean decision than to just tumble into it by default. Learn how to decide what to do and not have it bleed into the rest of your day, as in: “Oh, I’ve already blown it; I may as well keep going.” No! You don’t have to go there!
  • You’ll learn how to make the 5 D’s a part of your life, and how to remember to use them.
  • And, you’ll get the worksheet I use with my private clients and my groups to help you learn and use these techniques.

Enjoy!

Ep 26 Just Tell Me What to Eat! How to Love the Foods that Love You Back and Eat Like a Naturally Slim Woman

Tuesday, June 28th, 2016

Episode 26: Just Tell Me What to Eat! How to Love the Foods that Love You Back and Eat Like a Naturally Slim Woman

Tell Me What to Eat Podcast 26

The biggest question my clients have when they first come to me is this: “What should I eat?”

And that is their biggest desire. They want to lose weight, and they want me to tell them step by step exactly what to eat to get to their goal weight.

So in today’s episode, I want to talk to you about what to eat.

Here’s what we’ll cover in our coaching session today:

  • Why you look at food as good or bad and where that perspective came from.
  • Why that way of looking at food isn’t helping you and may actually be making weight loss harder.
  • What your parents and teachers may have trained you to think when it comes to what you eat.
  • How you judge yourself and why, when you eat a ‘bad’ food.
  • When you see certain foods as forbidden, what happens when you do eat one of these foods?
  • And if you manage to stay away from forbidden foods, why you feel so deprived.
  • How can you look at different types of food without the good vs. bad division?
  • What are helpful foods?
  • How to incorporate less helpful but good tasting foods into your diet without losing control.
  • How to judge how much ‘less helpful’ / treat food to allow yourself and still lose weight.

I want you to feel secure even when there is no exact prescription of what and how much to eat. I want you to always know what to eat and how much to eat because you know what works for you and your body. And this is what I teach my clients.

So even if your question is, “What should I eat?”, I promise that you will enjoy and learn from this enlightening coaching session.

Thin Is Not Your Goal

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2016

Thin is not your goalIf you’re anything like my clients, you probably think you’re too fat. You think you need to lose weight.

Wow, that sounds harsh, even as I type these words.

But the truth is that in our country, at any given time, almost half the adult female population wants to lose weight.

That’s hard to imagine. So many of us are not happy with how we look, how we feel, how we are in this world.

And we think we need to be thin.

Well, being thin is not a good goal. It has nothing to do with your body, your shape and who you were meant to be in the world.

Most of us aren’t physically capable of being ‘thin’. But we hold up pictures of very skinny models as an image of what we aspire to.

Sounds like a recipe for failure. And not only failure.

Sounds like a recipe for unhappiness.

Because if we don’t take into account who we are, how our genetics play out in our lives, and what we are physically capable of, that image of ‘thin’ will always be like the carrot on the stick in front of the horse.

We never get there.

So, what do we do?

Well, if you think you have extra weight on your body that’s slowing you down, that’s increasing your risk of weight-related disease, and that’s messing with your self-image, it’s time to do something about it.

But know that your self-image can be good regardless of what the number on the scale says. It’s all about how much you love yourself. And the more you love yourself, the better you’re feeding yourself, and taking care of yourself.

Part of the quest for thin comes from comparing ourselves to others. And very likely, comparing ourselves to media images and cultural icons (think: movie star!)

This comparison habit brings us one thing, and it’s not ‘thin’… it’s pain.

The only person we should be comparing ourselves to is us. And even that is dicey. Because comparing yourself to you of ten years ago is fruitless. You’re not the same person you were, and your body is not usually capable of what it was ten years ago.

The key is to think ‘what’s my personal best?’

What’s the right weight for my body, this body, this frame, and these genetics?

What weight will make me healthier, and give me more energy, and allow me to move around easier?

It’s not ‘thin’.

Thin is a place you never get to.

Do yourself a favor.

Be healthier. Eat from hunger. Eat good stuff.

Make those your goals.

Not thin.
