Episode 80: Weekend Weight Loss or Weight Gain?

What does your typical eating week look like?

If you’re like I used to be, it would look straight and narrow Monday through Thursday, and wide-open and full speed ahead on the weekend.

I’d tell myself on Friday that I deserved to reward myself for getting through the week. For accomplishing all that I did. For putting in hours and powering through, even when I was tired.

And, I had a very willing partner in my husband, David, whose favorite suggestion is always, “Let’s treat ourselves! It’s the weekend!”

So… I deserved to ‘treat myself’, right?

And that’s what I did. Until too many Monday mornings of shame, regret, and an upward moving scale woke me up.

I finally realized that if I kept up the pattern I was living in, I’d never get where I wanted to go.

I’d never accomplish my eating goals. My self-care goals. And certainly not my weight goals.

So, what’s the solution? Do you have to be strict and rigid and hard on yourself all the time?

No! If you know me, you know that’s not how I roll. Pull up a comfy chair and listen as I coach you on how to have a good week AND a good weekend and still be heading in the right direction.

Imagine that you’ve done it! You’ve held on long enough to change the way you are eating. You’ve stopped eating emotionally. Maybe you’ve been resisting those urges to binge.

But oddly enough, you don’t feel confident and proud. You feel nervous and insecure.

Why? Because you may have used sheer willpower to accomplish your feat, and that isn’t enough.

That isn’t enough to change from the inside out. To change deeply enough that you do walk around feeling relaxed and proud and confident.

And my goal for you is that if someone asks how you eat or what you do for yourself, you might find it hard to explain, because these days you think: That’s just how I live!

You know all those promises you make to yourself?

“I’ll do better.” “I’ll be good.” “I’ll eat less.”

Well, they are worthless. Sorry to burst your bubble, but our coaching sessions aim to get you past doing what you’ve always done, and onto doing what works.

And one of the first things that needs to change is the clarity… yes, the clarity of the promises you make.

I want you to start creating guidelines and getting totally clear on what you will and won’t do. Exactly what are these promises to yourself?

Because only when you are really clear will you be able to make the right decision when faced with choices in the moment.

Eating better or eating less is meaningless in the moment you are sitting in front of a plate of food.

What does better mean? And exactly what does less mean?

Here’s where we will nail this down together: I want you to be able to keep your promises to get the results you want. To do that, you need to learn to make better promises. Starting now.

For a friend?

For comfort?

Smaller bills?

A bigger paycheck?

It’s not there.

Are you looking for grateful kids?

For a more attentive husband?

For the answer to what you want to do with your life?

It’s not in there.

Nope.

Nothin’ in there but food.

Only good for hunger.

What are your favorite excuses? I’m sure you’re a bit indignant right now, as in: I don’t have any favorite excuses!

But let me assure you, you definitely do!

If you constantly start and stop your weight loss efforts, and your efforts to stop bingeing and take better care of yourself, the ‘stop’ part comes about because of your excuses.

Excuses are made-up stories you tell yourself about why you can’t do something.

I know you don’t really want to believe them. But you do.

In this coaching session, I’m going to show you what an excuse is, and how it’s different from an obstacle.

We’re going to talk about why and how your brain falls in love with your excuses, and doesn’t want to let them go. Even though they hurt you.

If this sounds like the bad boyfriend from 7th grade who you wanted to dump but couldn’t, sit down and listen.

I’m going to show you how to break up with those old harmful excuses. And in the process, find your way around any obstacles that ARE real.
