Several years ago, I struggled. With just about everything.

Some days I felt ‘fat’ and other days I was content with my body. Some days I struggled with my eating and other days I just ate naturally. Sometimes I felt attractive, and other days I hated the way I looked. And my moods! I never knew how I’d wake up, feeling up one day and down the next. And I had no idea that I could ever feel a sense of control or understanding of these moods.

My self-image fluctuated wildly. And now I know that this happened because my thoughts about myself were fluctuating wildly too.

I had no compass to tell me the truth. How I really looked and felt and what was real and what was just my story. This takes perspective and being objective about yourself.

Sometimes you have a friend who serves as your mirror. Being with her lets you see yourself as the rest of the world sees you. And then you can be objective about what’s really you.

But sometimes you need the objectivity of a professional, who can see you and help you see yourself. In truth.

Today we’re talking about how to gain some objectivity in how you view life and yourself.

Have you ever thought that you are driving yourself crazy? If you step back and listen to all the things you think about your eating and your weight, it’s not surprising that you might think that.

Imagine the jumble of thoughts you’re thinking about your eating. Why am I eating this? What should I be eating? Why can’t I stick to my plan? What’s wrong with me?

And the list goes on and on and on. It’s enough to drive you crazy. But wait! You are the one thinking those thoughts. You are the one creating that swirl of confusion.

Now, I’m not blaming you. And you shouldn’t blame yourself either. But I think it helps to know that if your thoughts are creating a mess of confusion, then your thoughts are the way out of that confusion.

We all talk to ourselves. You are no exception. I want your self-talk to be honest, but compassionate. And productive.

I want you to be able to think your way out of the mess you’re in. This is doable. And this is what you will learn.

Episode 125: Will Eating This Be Worth It?

The ultimate question that you may never ask yourself. Too often we eat because of a feeling, a memory or a need that has nothing to do with our hunger.

This is not good, right? This is what gives you extra weight to carry around. If your body isn’t hungry, no matter what you think the food may do for you, it will always be extra food that you don’t need.

And extra food is always stored as fat. Period.

So, if you want to lose that extra weight, you need to start questioning yourself before you eat without hunger.

And a good way to do that is to ask: “Will eating this be worth it?”

That will require you to look ahead into the future and think about how you will feel after you eat this thing.

What do you hope eating now will do for you? What are you hoping to accomplish by eating right now?

I want you to learn to look ahead and make your decision about whether to eat based on the results you’ll get. The consequences you’re creating. Because that is the reality.

And rather than just feel bad after you eat something you shouldn’t have, let’s get in the habit of deciding whether this food, these bites, are worth it to you.

That is the question I want you to ask yourself if you want to eat when you aren’t hungry: “Will eating this be worth it?”

Do you ever say this to yourself?

  • I’ll just have a bite.
  • I deserve a little treat.
  • I’ll start fresh tomorrow.

If so, you’re certainly not alone. You may be the most honest person you know, yet when it comes to telling the real truth to yourself, you’re falling a little short.

You want to believe yourself when you say, “I’ll just have a little.” But when we’re talking about eating without hunger, you need to look at your history.

And your history shows that when you start eating for the wrong reason, it tends to keep going.

This is the truth. You want to eat ____________ and you’re not hungry. The truth is, whenever you do this, a little bit becomes a lot. And that is the truth about why you can’t lose weight.

I want you to take a deep look at all the little lies you tell yourself. Some of them may be about eating. And some of them may be about other habits you have, like starting over and over with anything you’re working on.

The feeling these thoughts create feels so real… because it is. It might make you feel justified or entitled to do this thing, or to eat this thing. But since that feeling comes from a little lie you tell yourself, it’s not a feeling based on your reality.

Episode 123: Tough Times Without Overeating

How are you in your life right now? Are you peaceful? Or stressed?

Wherever you are, know that life is full of hills and valleys. We all go through tough times and big challenges.

Of course, you don’t want to go through a tough time. But this is part of living. And it really makes you appreciate the normal, everyday ups and downs.

The question for today is: How can you get through tough times without resorting to emotional eating?

Do you call it stress eating? Or emotional eating? Whatever you call it, it happens when you tell yourself you can’t handle a painful emotion.

And so, you feel something that doesn’t feel good, and you eat to escape the feeling.

I want you to be able to get through the toughest times and still not go to food that your body doesn’t need.

Can you do this? Yes. You can.

In this coaching session I will walk you through figuring out how you want to show up for the challenges that life will give you. Without eating your way through.

When you get through this tough time, I want you to look back and feel proud, and that you did the best you could do.

Is this hard? Is this a challenge in itself? Maybe. But if you’ve got a plan, and you know how to think your way through it, you’ve got this. Without overeating.

Episode 122: Emotional Eating and Your Weight

Today we’re going to focus on what I’m guessing is your main issue: emotional eating.

This happens when you have linked an emotion with food. So, when you start to feel the beginning of that feeling, whatever it is, and it feels uncomfortable, you have learned to muffle that feeling with food.

The food tastes good, and it distracts you from whatever that feeling was. And so, your habit is formed.

But if you eat from an emotion without hunger, no doubt you will be carrying around some extra weight.

We talked about emotional eating in Episodes 40, 42 and 43. And I thought we should revisit this topic and get really clear so you can understand how to solve this problem.

Do you eat when you’re happy? Do you eat when you’re sad? How about when you’re bored?

Well, this is emotional eating. It includes what some call ‘stress eating’.

All of this type of eating is really a habit. It can feel pretty strong and pretty compelling.

Almost like once the idea to eat comes over you, you have no choice.

But I want to show you that you can learn to separate your mood from your food. And how it’s done.
